How do Community Food Mentors help the community?
Through their involvement in Community Food Actions, Community Food Mentors help increase:
- awareness and access to resources and education regarding healthy eating and food security
- food knowledge and preparation skills
- access to local, healthy food
- opportunities for community’s to engage and mobilize around their food security priorities
Examples of Community Food Actions include:
- community food programs such as collective kitchens or community gardens
- sharing passion and knowledge of food with neighbours and friends
- workshops on a wide range of topics such as cooking, safe food handling, eating well for less, healthy snacks and lunches for children, growing your own food, and preserving food
- food related information booths at farmers’ markets, health fairs and other community venues
- bringing people together with local producers and celebrating food
